Meet the Sheep
Learning about Ohio sheep production
To better understand how coyotes might be impacting livestock, it is important for us to know how livestock in Ohio is managed. We also need whisker samples from livestock for our coyote diet analysis.
In December 2022 our team met up with Gregg Fogle, the manager of the OSU Small Ruminant Research Facility in Wooster, to learn about sheep and goat husbandry. We were also able to get some whiskers from 10 goats, 22 ewes, and 32 lambs! We found out that lambs in particular have very long, curling white whiskers on their cheeks and near their eyes that are great for sampling (and also very cute).
We enjoyed the trip, learned a lot, and collected valuable data. Thanks to Dr. Brady Campbell and Gregg for making this happen!
